KAHAUIKI (MIDDLE STREET) STATION AREA

Connectivity & Circulation:
- Middle Street Transit Center established as a true multi-modal hub
- Promenade along Keehi Lagoon waterfront to improve access to waterfront open spaces
- Pedestrian/bicycle path along Kalihi Stream and across Middle Street to provide access to waterfront parks
- Elevated pedestrian bridge across Nimitz Highway to provide access to the waterfront
- New and widened sidewalks along Dillingham Boulevard
Parks & Open Space:
- Large community park (at least five acres) with recreational opportunities, such as ball fields, picnic areas, seating, and potentially a community center supporting programs and services
- Beach park on peninsula in Keehi Lagoon, with potential for boat launching, beach access, and picnicking, to create a regional park destination that is linked to Keehi Lagoon Park and the station
- Urban parks and plazas in new development projects as public/private spaces
- Promenade along Keehi Lagoon waterfront to serve as open space and a recreational amenity
Urban Form:
- Scaled development along pedestrian-oriented retail streets and pedestrian connections with fine-grained, highly articulated facades, changes in materials, ample fenestration, and visible entryways
- Articulated building facades and continuous street wall with buildings close to sidewalk to define public realm, including along Dillingham Boulevard
- Facade improvements along King Street to boost economic vitality of independent stores
- Parking areas designed to permit activate street frontage
- Physical and visual access to waterfront
- Upper levels of building stepped back to provide transition where adjacent building height regulations are lower
- Transitions and buffers between industrial and residential uses
Land Use:
- Industrial and commercial maintained with greater mix of residential and commercial uses
- Concentrated areas of vitality with active uses on ground-floor frontages
- Moderate building intensities, generally declining with distance from the station and Dillingham Boulevard
- Uses such as cafes and convenience stores to promote vibrancy next to the station
- Waterfront park on peninsula in Keehi Lagoon
