KUALAKA‘I (EAST KAPOLEI) STATION AREA

Connectivity & Circulation:
- Bus transit center and large park-and-ride facilities
- Bus, bicycle, walking, and shared-use transportation connections to facilitate multi-modal access to the station
- Multi-use path along Kualakai Parkway next to the Kaloi Gulch Diversion Channel
- Pedestrian openings in perimeter wall of Kanehili subdivision to directly connect to Kualakai Parkway for station access
- Elevated pedestrian crossing over Kualakai Parkway
Parks & Open Space:
- Kaloi-Kualakai recreational greenway along the Kaloi Gulch Diversion Channel
- Community park near the station, serving as the southern terminus of the Kaloi-Kualakai greenway
- Abutilon Contingency Reserve (large natural preservation area) integrated into open space network
Urban Form:
- Buildings oriented toward the street, while generally observing a uniform setback to create a continuous facade
- Kaloi-Kualakai greenway serving as a transition for buildings facing Kualakai Parkway with maintenance and other back-of-house activities accessed by internal streets and service roads
- Parking garages or podiums screened or wrapped on street side with habitable dwelling units or commercial spaces
- Buildings and open spaces configured to take advantage of public amenities and views of the mountain ranges, while respecting trade-wind patterns and other environmental conditions to capitalize on opportunities for alternative energy and natural solutions
Land Use:
- Mixed-use development to promote active, vibrant streetscapes with commercial activity on most street frontages to provide distinctive, vibrant public spaces at ground level
- Smaller block sizes nearest the station
- Building intensity generally declining with distance from the station
