HŌLAU (CHINATOWN) STATION AREA

Connectivity & Circulation:
- Fine-grained street grid maintained
- Kekaulike Mall extended to Nimitz Highway as pedestrian-only, with limited truck access for deliveries
- Promenade along Chinatown/Downtown harborfront and both sides of Nuuanu Stream
- Bicycle lanes along Beretania Boulevard, King Street, and Nuuanu Avenue
- Pedestrian/bicycle bridge across Nuuanu Stream, connecting the end of Pauahi Street with Aala Park, to improve pedestrian circulation and reduce walking time
- Integrated rail stop and transit station with basic services and amenities
Parks & Open Space:
- Urban parks and plazas, including public/private spaces integrated with new development
- Nuuanu Stream corridor revitalization
- Aala Park revitalized with new programming and uses
Urban Form:
- Historic trail or special sidewalk pavers to identify the Chinatown historic district
- Scaled development along pedestrian-oriented retail streets with fine-grained, highly articulated facades, changes in materials, ample fenestration, and visible entryways
- Articulated building facades and continuous street wall with buildings close to sidewalk to define public realm
- Physical and visual access to waterfront
- Variation and articulation through changes in building height and massing
- Parking areas designed to permit active street frontage
- Existing scale maintained
- Buildings oriented along Nimitz Highway to maximize waterfront views and access from rest of the historic district
Land Use:
- Mixed land use designations maintained
- Concentrated areas of vitality with active uses on ground-floor frontage
- Building intensity generally declining with distance from the station
- Buildings heights consistent with existing requirements of Chinatown Special District
- Taller heights along Nimitz Highway immediately adjacent to the station
- Uses that build on Chinatown’s existing character, such as businesses that are multi-cultural, family-friendly, food-related, small and locally owned
- Reuse of surface parking lots along Nimitz Highway with mixed-use developments, cultural uses, community services, shopping, food-related and/or residential units
