Planning, Zoning and Environment Committee will discuss the process to complete an application for renaming the section of Hawaii Kai Drive leading up to Kalama Valley and into Mariners Cove off of Lunalilo Home Road. This is one of two meetings. This initiative is a follow up from the East Honolulu Sustainable Communities Plan (EHSC Plan) adopted in March of 2021.

There are no longer State or Country plans to connect Hawaii Kai Drive as the original consideration is over 25 years old and officially off the books and removed from the EHSC Plan. Homes have since been built and the community has increased walking, biking, and running use of what would have been a vehicle road. Over the past 10 years the connectivity of neighborhoods by bike and foot has increased in this area and during the review of the EHSC Plan this was discussed under several headers (aging in place and safe walkable neighborhoods/ and increasing non-vehicle connectivity of neighborhoods).

The DPP has since recommended we rename the section of Hawaii Kai Drive leading up to Kalama Valley to reflect that area (Kamiloiki) with a proper place name (this will eventually help with Goggle Maps which currently creates some confusion for folks not familiar with our roads). At the suggestion of DPP, we have reached out to several area folks familiar with “proper places names and use of Hawaiian names” –

1. CALL TO ORDER: PZE Committee Co-Chair Elizabeth Reilly

2. REVIEW INSTRUCTRIONS FOR FILING a Street Name Application (Section 22-8, ROH)
