A barrier has been installed to prevent pedestrians from walking on the compromised sidewalk.
HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC) and Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM) will implement a single-lane closure on the makai-bound travel lane of River Street, between Nimitz Highway and North King Street, on Thursday, September 4, 2025.
The closure is necessary to allow crews to safely investigate and assess the condition of the soil and channel wall beneath portions of the sidewalk that have become undermined. For public safety, the sidewalk along River Street adjacent to Nuʻuanu Stream is already closed and will remain closed until repairs are completed.
As part of the work, DFM, in coordination with DDC, will remove rock and mortar planter boxes and sections of the sidewalk to provide access for the investigation. The work is expected to take one day and will help determine the extent of needed repairs to protect both the public and the surrounding infrastructure.
The lane closure will be in the makai-bound travel lane of River Street (between Nimitz Highway and North King Street)
Motorists are advised to use alternate routes and follow posted traffic control measures. Pedestrians are advised to exercise caution when approaching heavy equipment in the work area.
