HONOLULU — The following is attributable to Mayor Rick Blangiardi on the passing of former Governor George Ariyoshi.
“It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of Governor George Ariyoshi at the age of 100.
Governor Ariyoshi was a towering figure in Hawai‘i’s history and a trailblazer whose legacy will endure for generations. As the first Japanese American governor in the United States and the longest-serving governor in our state’s history, he led with humility, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility to the people he served.
I had a long and meaningful personal relationship with him, more so than any other political figure in Hawai‘i. He was a friend and a mentor to me, and someone I truly admired and respected. My wife, Karen, also held him in the highest regard, and we both feel very fortunate to have known him.
His steady leadership helped guide Hawai‘i through challenging times, always with a focus on fiscal responsibility, fairness, and opportunity for all. He carried himself with quiet strength and dignity, earning the respect of colleagues and constituents alike.
On behalf of the people of the City and County of Honolulu, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife, Jean, his family, and all who knew and loved him. We join the entire state in honoring his extraordinary life of service and his lasting contributions to Hawai‘i.
Rest in peace, Governor.”
