O‘AHU — The reopening of the Harry Mamizuka Swimming Complex at Mānoa Valley District Park has been delayed due to back-to-back Kona low storms and other remnant rainfall, affecting the second phase of pool improvements.
The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is now anticipating the reopening of Mānoa’s Pool, and the completion of renovation work, by the end of April 2026.
This second phase of work began in late November 2025 and includes three separate pool improvement projects, including:
- Removing the old, decrepit diving blocks and replacing them with new diving blocks. The new diving blocks are made possible thanks to a $67,000 donation from the Mamizuka ‘Ohana.
- Repainting the pool bleachers.
- Fixing paint within the main and keiki pools, including the lane lines.
The pool complex was previously closed from September 2024 until early June 2025 to address chipping paint on the pool surface and bleachers. Unfortunately, parts of the pool’s painted surface have since eroded, believed to have resulted from unanticipated moisture restricting the paint from properly adhering. These Phase 2 efforts aim to install more reliable painting on the pool surface.
Similarly, the bleacher paint has shown signs of peeling. Additional layers of paint are being applied to both address the peeling and more thoroughly encapsulate the original lead-containing paint used on the bleachers decades ago.
We sincerely hope this Phase 2 work will result in the pool remaining in working order until a larger Capital Improvement Project can deliver longer-term repairs to this popular pool facility.
