The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the leeward areas of O‘ahu, in effect through 6 p.m. Friday, August 1, 2025. The Honolulu Fire Department urges the public to remain vigilant to prevent fires.
The Honolulu Fire Department is advising the following to prevent wildfires:
- Avoid activities that produce sparks or open flame – risky equipment operations, driving or idling over dry vegetation, cooking with an open flame.
- Clear and remove brush and other vegetation from around your house, creating a safety zone.
- Store flammable materials safely away from the exterior of your home.
- If it can catch fire, do not let it touch your house.
- Report suspicious activity you may have seen before, during, or after a fire.
- Keep fire lanes and access points unobstructed to ensure fire apparatuses can reach your home.
- Make and practice a family evacuation plan.
- Report any possible fires – including smoke or flames – by calling 911.
99% of wildfires in Hawai‘i are started by people, mostly by accident.
A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will occur shortly.
A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels can contribute to extreme fire behavior. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. The warning may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.
Residents are encouraged to have their Go Bags ready. If there is a fire in your area, do not wait for an official evacuation notice if you need more time to evacuate or if you feel unsafe. Before leaving your home, close all doors and windows to help slow the spread of fire.
