Recovery continues Saturday as City brings services to Lāʻie and supports impacted communities

HONOLULU — Recovery efforts continued across Oʻahu on Saturday following the recent Kona low storms, with City crews, community partners, and volunteers maintaining strong momentum in supporting impacted residents. As previously announced, today’s update is the City and County of Honolulu’s only public update for the day.

Pop-Up Community Assistance Center in Lāʻie

A Pop-Up Community Assistance Center was held today at Brigham Young University Hawaiʻi’s old gymnasium in Lāʻie, bringing critical recovery resources directly to Windward, North Shore communities. In partnership with the KEY Project and the Ko‘olauloa Resilience Fund, the one-day event provided residents and farmers with access to financial assistance, food distribution, SNAP enrollment support, document replacement services, insurance guidance, agricultural support, permitting and utility assistance, and other essential services.

The event reflects the City’s continued commitment to meeting communities where they are and ensuring access to recovery resources across impacted areas.

A Pop-up Community Assistance Center is being planned for the Wai‘anae District Park gymnasium  next Thursday, April 9, beginning at 4pm.

Waialua Community Assistance Center (CAC)

The Waialua Community Assistance Center and Community Distribution Hub remained open today at Waialua District Park, continuing to serve residents with services and supplies.

The CAC continues to operate daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering in-person assistance from City agencies and nonprofit partners. The Community Distribution Hub remains open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., providing food, water, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies.

Both the CAC and Distribution Hub will be closed on Easter Sunday and will reopen on Monday at 10 a.m.

Debris Removal and Operations

Debris removal operations remain ongoing island-wide, with continued hauling and processing at the temporary debris site at Central Oʻahu Regional Park (CORP). Crews are maintaining steady progress in clearing storm-related waste, with a focus on residential areas and critical infrastructure.

On Saturday, approximately 13 loads of debris (375 cubic yards / 110 tons) were taken to the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill, and an additional 100 cubic yards/13 tons of metal materials were taken to a metal recycler.

Storm Debris Drop-Off in Lāʻie

The Department of Environmental Services hosted a storm debris drop-off event today at Brigham Young University Hawaiʻi to assist residents in Lāʻie and surrounding communities. The effort provided a convenient option for residents continuing cleanup operations.

Looking Ahead

City departments continue to monitor weather conditions closely and are preparing for the potential of additional severe weather next week. Preparations are underway to ensure resources, personnel, and communication systems remain ready to support the community if needed.
