HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction is conducting emergency design and repairs to Waipahu Street Arch Bridge following impacts from the recent Kona low storm.
A portion of Waipahu Street near Waipahu Street Arch Bridge has been closed since Friday night due to storm-related damage to the bridge. City engineers from the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) are conducting a thorough assessment of the structure. Based on their findings, one lane on the upstream side of the Waipahu Street Arch bridge over Waikele Stream near Awamoi Street has been temporarily reopened to westbound traffic, while eastbound traffic will continue to be detoured.
In coordination with the Department of Transportation Services (DTS), a traffic control and detour plan has been developed to support this partial reopening. People driving eastbound are being detoured to Farrington Highway. Additional signage has been posted along the thoroughfare to alert motorists to the modified traffic flow. DTS’s contractor began implementing the plan at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2026.
Motorists are advised to expect delays, follow posted signage, and use caution when traveling through the area.
Ongoing assessments will allow DDC to develop a plan to fully repair and reopen the bridge to both lanes of travel but no timeline is available at this point. The City will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as repair work progresses.
