Mā‘ili Stream Mouth Maintenance

The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Facility Maintenance will be utilizing heavy equipment to remove the sand brought in from the ocean at the mouth of Mā‘ili Stream near Maipalaoa Road beginning June 30, 2025.

The maintenance work is authorized under Department of the Army Permit POH-2020-00131 issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

While work is being performed, the public is asked to avoid the work area on the beach due to the heavy equipment being used, and avoid swimming in the ocean immediately outside where the sand at the mouth of the stream will be removed as there may be strong currents resulting from the opened stream mouth.

City crews will also remove as much large debris and floatable litter as possible, and signs will be posted to warn beachgoers of the discharge of the stream water to the ocean.

The maintenance work will be performed from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and is expected to be completed by Thursday, July 3, 2025, pending good weather conditions and availability of equipment and manpower.

The City appreciates the community’s patience as work is performed in the area with increased noise levels throughout the duration of the maintenance work due to the use of heavy equipment in the stream area.

If you should have any questions, please contact Mr. Thomas Takeuchi of the Division of Road Maintenance at (808) 768-3608.
