Honolulu Zoo celebrates National Zookeeper Week

HONOLULU In honor of National Zookeeper Week (July 20–26), the City and County of Honolulu is proud to celebrate the dedicated, passionate, and talented zookeepers at the Honolulu Zoo, who care for more than 900 animals across the zoo’s 42-acre facility in Waikīkī.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate the tireless efforts of our wonderful zookeepers,” said Honolulu Zoo Director Linda Santos. “These hard-working individuals not only ensure that all of our animals are well cared for, but also serve as educators and wildlife ambassadors.”

National Zookeeper Week, celebrated every third week in July, shines a spotlight on the frontline caretakers of animals in zoos, aquariums, and wildlife sanctuaries across the country. Zookeepers are responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of a wide range of species—often working early mornings, long hours, and physically demanding shifts.

“Our zookeepers are the heart and soul of the Honolulu Zoo,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “Their dedication to the health, well-being, and daily care of the animals in their charge is truly inspiring. We are proud to honor them this week—and every week—for the remarkable work they do.”

From preparing specialized diets to cleaning and maintaining habitats, Honolulu’s zookeepers play a vital behind-the-scenes role in caring for animals and supporting global conservation efforts.

The public is encouraged to join the celebration by visiting the Honolulu Zoo and by sharing their appreciation online using #NationalZookeeperWeek on social media.
