Pūpūkea, Oʻahu — The City and County of Honolulu’s Ocean Safety Department (HOSD) is proud to announce the installation of a new lifeguard tower at Pūpūkea Beach Park, home to Kapoʻo, commonly known as Shark’s Cove. This addition strengthens safety measures for residents and visitors enjoying Oʻahu’s North Shore.
The newly constructed tower enhances the department’s ability to monitor ocean conditions, respond quickly to emergencies, and provide improved coverage at one of the island’s most popular shoreline destinations. Known for its unique lava rock formations and vibrant marine life, Shark’s Cove attracts swimmers, snorkelers, and divers year-round, especially during the calmer summer months.
“This new lifeguard tower at Kapoʻo represents a meaningful investment in public safety and in the North Shore community,” said Kurt Lager, Chief of Ocean Safety. “While this area is known for its beauty and draws people from around the world, it also presents hazards that can change quickly. By establishing a permanent lifeguard presence, we are strengthening our ability to prevent incidents before they occur through education, awareness, and constant vigilance.”
The addition of the tower gives lifeguards a higher vantage point, improving visibility across the cove and surrounding areas, including Three Tables and Keʻiki Beach. It also provides a more secure and functional workspace, supporting faster response times and improved communication during emergencies.
The Honolulu Ocean Safety Department remains committed to protecting the public through proactive safety measures, community education, and continued investment in beach safety resources.
A Blessing for the new tower will take place on March 31st, 2026 at 11:00 am.
