Heavy Storm leads to multiple Wastewater Spills across Oʻahu

HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is responding to wastewater spills at the Wahiawā, Kāne‘ohe, and Kailua Regional facilities. Triggered by heavy rain and system inflow and infiltration on Friday, March 13, the overflows occurred at the following location:

· Wahiawā Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) (12:44 p.m.): Storage tanks reached capacity, leading to a spill into Lake Wilson.
· Kāne‘ohe Tunnel Influent Facility (2:45 p.m.): High flows caused a manhole overflow into Kawa Stream.
· Kailua Regional WWTP (9:45 p.m.): Overwhelmed primary clarifiers resulted in a discharge into Nu‘upia Pond.

ENV is currently calculating the total discharge volumes for all three sites.

Following the cessation of severe weather, ENV will post warning signs and conduct water quality testing.
