Episode 115: Jordan Abe on free junior golf and Fairway Tavern

This week, Jordan Abe, Golf Course System Administrator for the City and County of Honolulu joins host Brandi Higa on the One O‘ahu Podcast to explain how juniors can golf for free at our municipal courses, a new food concessionaire coming to ‘Ewa Villages Golf Course, and the historic gains in both revenue and rounds played at city courses.

Juniors Golf for FREE

Looking for something fun and affordable to do with your keiki this summer? Why not hit up one of the City’s six golf courses.

“We have the best deal in town for juniors,” said Abe. “If you’re a resident between the ages of 8 to 17, you can get a resident Golf ID card and once you get the resident Golf ID card, golf is free,”

Golf ID cards are physical government issued ID cards and must be processed in-person. For more information on how to get a resident Golf ID card, adult green fees, golf course locations, tee times, and hours, visit https://www.honolulu.gov/des/golf-courses/golf-id/

Fairway Tavern

A new food concessionaire is coming to ‘Ewa Villages Golf Course. This fall, golfers and area residents will be able to swing by and enjoy Fairway Tavern.

“We feel this concessionaire is going to be a great fit,” replied Abe. “They’re going to cater to, obviously our golfers first, but also to the residents around ‘Ewa Villages Golf Course as well. They’re looking at doing a lot of activities in the evening just to kind of promote more recreational things, not just to the golf course but to the people that live in the area.”

‘Ewa Villages is located at 91-1760 Park Row, ‘Ewa Beach, Hawai‘I, 96706.

Historic Gains

Things are looking up for city golf. Our six municipal courses have been bringing in, on average, about $1 million per month, that’s roughly a 25% bump from before the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, many residents came back to the game of golf.

“The challenge we had was trying to make sure that they continued playing at our golf courses,” explained Abe. “And I think one thing we do really well is that because we are the most affordable golf courses in town, or in our industry, that keeps golfers staying here.”
