HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is responding to wastewater spills at facilities in Wahiawā and Lāʻie caused by heavy rain and system inflow and infiltration on March 20, 2026.
• Wahiawā Wastewater Treatment Plant: At 2:56 a.m., storage tanks reached capacity, resulting in a wastewater spill into Lake Wilson. The spill was successfully stopped at 9:30 a.m.
• Lāʻie Wastewater Reclamation Facility: At 2:45 a.m., elevated flows caused the equalization basin to overflow, with wastewater entering the Kahawainui Stream. The spill is ongoing.
ENV crews are actively monitoring conditions and calculating total discharge volumes for both locations.
Following the cessation of severe weather, ENV will post warning signs and initiate water quality sampling. Residents are advised to stay out of the affected waterways until signs are removed.
