CORE supports evacuation of Hui Mahiʻai ʻĀina due to flooding, evacuation shelters remain available

Flooded conditions at Hui Mahiʻai ʻĀina kauhale in Waimānalo

WAIMĀNALO – The City and County of Honolulu’s Crisis Outreach Response and Engagement Program (CORE) assisted in providing transportation for 18 adults, four children, and two dogs from Hui Mahiʻai ʻĀina, after the homeless community facility in Waimānalo experienced heavy flooding Saturday morning. Moving these clients to safe shelter was done in partnership with the National Guard, the State of Hawai‘i, Honolulu Fire Department, Honolulu Police Department, and several others.

The clients were moved to the City’s evacuation shelter at Kāneʻohe District Park. These shelters are operated in partnership between the City and the Hawaii Red Cross, along with support from houseless outreach providers in coordination with Partners In Care.

While weather conditions improve across O‘ahu, the City will continue to have shelters available for residents and visitors who need a safe place to go.

Residents seeking shelter are advised to bring their own food and basic necessities if at all possible. All locations are pet-friendly, but pets must be leashed or in a carrier. Owners must care for their pets and bring all supplies needed. Sites are staffed by small teams of workers to help keep the facilities safe and will have limited supplies on hand. The public is advised to bring what they need to be comfortable.

The most current list of shelter locations is available at p.veoci.com/hnlshelter and will be updated throughout the severe weather event. Updates will also be sent via HNL Alert.

The City’s CORE program began in December 2021 and is operated by the Honolulu Emergency Services Department. To learn more about the CORE program, please visit https://emergencyservices.honolulu.gov/core/
