City urges residents to conserve water to help reduce strain on wastewater system

HONOLULU — Due to ongoing heavy rainfall, the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is asking residents to conserve water to help reduce strain on the wastewater system.

Heavy rains are causing inflow and infiltration into the wastewater system, placing additional pressure on pump stations and treatment facilities. Conserving water during this time helps lower the risk of sewer system overflows.

ENV also reminds the public not to drain floodwater or street runoff into sewer manholes, as this can overwhelm the system.

Crews are actively monitoring wastewater system conditions and responding as needed during the ongoing heavy rains.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed by signing up for HNL Alert, the City’s official emergency notification system.
