City to honor Sept. 11 victims with Tribute of Light

Honolulu Hale is shown lit up with blue lights, rather than the regular normal lights, on a night

HONOLULU – Mayor Rick Blangiardi is proud to announce that the City and County of Honolulu will join Boston and New York City in paying tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks by illuminating two of Honolulu’s most iconic buildings in blue light.

On the evening of Thursday, September 11, 2025, Honolulu Hale and the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena will glow in solidarity with cities across the nation, symbolizing remembrance, resilience, and unity.

“Honolulu stands with cities everywhere in honoring the memory of all those we lost on September 11th, as well as the courage of the first responders and the enduring spirit of the American people,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “By joining Boston and New York City in this powerful tribute of light, we reaffirm our commitment to never forget.”

The Tribute of Light will begin at sunset and continue through the evening hours, serving as a solemn reminder of the nearly 3,000 lives lost on that day, including nine with ties to Hawai‘i.

Honolulu encourages residents and visitors alike to pause and reflect as the buildings are illuminated, honoring the legacy of those who perished and the resilience of the communities that carry their memory forward.

The City and County of Honolulu will hold the Mayor’s Remembrance Ceremony in solemn observance of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America. The ceremony will take place at the Eternal Flame outside Honolulu Hale and the public is invited.
