The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) wishes to alert residents and businesses in the vicinity of Waipahu Depot Street that construction work will begin next month to demolish and clear the old Waipahu Incinerator Building and other structures at 93-65 Waipahu Depot Street so that the space can be repurposed for improved public service.
Demolition work is scheduled to begin in July and last for approximately seven months. During that time, motorists — along with area residents and commercial establishments — should expect an increase in traffic between the work site, which is near the end of Waipahu Depot Street and Farrington Highway. Crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding all observed State holidays.
Dust and noise should also be expected as a result of the additional construction traffic and demolition process. These hazards will be controlled at the jobsite, and there will be no public access to the project site while work is being done.
The main structure at 93-65 Waipahu Depot Street is an incinerator building that was used between 1972 and 1994 as a municipal solid waste incinerator for the City. Other ancillary structures to be demolished include access ramps, a former two-story office building, a former wastewater treatment building, and a former transformer shed.
After demolition and clearing are complete, the City intends to construct a new and significantly expanded Waipahu Refuse Convenience Center at the site, replacing the existing convenience center currently in use along Waipahu Depot Street. The site will also house a new Waipahu Refuse Facility Baseyard for the ENV’s waste disposal and maintenance sections.
