City provides March 27 update on Kona low recovery efforts

HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu’s cleanup and recovery efforts continued in Waialua today, as additional resources are provided to North Shore residents impacted by the recent Kona low storm.

As of 2:00 p.m. Friday, 36 truckloads of debris have been delivered to Patsy T. Mink Central Oʻahu Regional Park, totaling approximately 415 tons. This brings the estimated total to 5,400 tons collected since Monday, much of it transported by private commercial haulers.

The Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM) remains active in Waialua, with 15 dump trucks removing debris, rubbish, and sediment from the community. A vacuum truck is also being used to clear drains across the North Shore. DFM crews will continue operations through the weekend.

Community Assistance Center

The Community Assistance Center (CAC) at Waialua District Park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. As of 3:15 p.m. Friday, more than 100 residents have been served.

Available services include distributing baby supplies, replacing birth, marriage, and death certificates, and assisting with lost prescriptions. The Department of Customer Services is also helping residents replace driver’s licenses and state IDs, and providing guidance on removing damaged or destroyed vehicles.

The CAC will remain open through the weekend, and large crowds are expected. Residents are advised to anticipate traffic congestion, remain patient, and drive with aloha. Parking is available at Waialua District Park, with additional parking at Waialua Elementary School available on weekends only.

Self-Report Damage Assessment

Residents impacted by the storm are strongly encouraged to complete a damage assessment report as soon as possible at  honolulu.gov/homedamage. The Department of Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency remind residents to thoroughly document damage with photos.

Real Property Tax Relief

The Department of Budget and Fiscal Services advises that property owners affected by the storm may be eligible for real property tax relief.

Brown Water Advisory

A Brown Water Advisory remains in effect for Oʻahu, issued by the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health. Residents and visitors are urged to stay out of the ocean following recent heavy rains. The Department of Health recommends avoiding ocean waters for at least 72 hours after the last rainfall. Even after that period, ocean users should continue to avoid areas where the water appears brown or murky.
