City schedules closure of emergency shelters as weather conditions improve

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu will close emergency shelters that were made available for residents and visitors ahead of the Kona Low Storm that impacted the island of O‘ahu. These shelters will close at noon on Sunday, March 15, 2026 as weather conditions improve and our sites report no clients in need of shelter.

The shelter at Kāneʻohe District Park will remain open until water levels decrease at Hui Mahiʻai ʻĀina and it is safe for residents to return. Residents have been taking refuge at the Kāneʻohe District Park shelter since their homeless community facility in Waimānalo experienced heavy flooding on Saturday.

Service providers will be on-hand to connect shelter clients with additional resources.

City officials encourage residents to remain attentive to future weather and shelter updates through HNL Alert. Create a profile and customize your alerts at hnlalert.gov.
