May 2025 Meeting Report
Chair Evan Weber

1. A committee meeting was held in-person on May 15, 2025, chaired by Evan Weber, and attended by committee members Bill Hicks and Claudine Tomasa, KNB member Jay Etzenbach, and several members of the community.

2. A discussion was held on the ongoing planning by the Department of Parks and Recreation with respect to a potential off-leash dog park at Kawainui Park. Perspectives were shared by nearby residents, dog owners, and youth sports community members. There was a consensus that it would be good to try to implement some kind of parking, car, and traffic management in the area, as well as ensure ongoing maintenance of the park. Some members of the dog community are interested in pursuing the Adopt-A-Park program to help out with maintenance.

3. In addition, we discussed the proposal from the Department of Parks and Recreation to expand on-leash dog access to other parks in Kailua. We do not think that Kalaheo Neighborhood Park should become an on-leash dog park. There was some interest in the possibility of Maunawili Valley Neighborhood Park as another potential off-leash dog park site. Discussion on KNB recommendations for allowing leashed dogs at additional parks will continue in future meetings.
