HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is reporting a wastewater spill at the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant caused by heavy rain and inflow infiltration.
The spill began on Saturday, March 21, 2026 after intense rainfall overwhelmed the plant’s Tunnel Influent Pump Station (TIPS). Personnel activated portable pumps to manage the surge, and the discharge continued until roughly 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
Wastewater flowed onto an adjacent grassy area and into Nuʻupia Pond. Personnel are currently working on cleanup and monitoring the affected areas.
Following the cessation of severe weather, ENV will post warning signs and initiating water quality sampling. Residents are advised to stay out of the affected waterways until signs are removed.
