HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Environmental Services (ENV) responded to a sewer spill reported at the intersection of Huiʻiwa Street and Kahekili Highway Tuesday morning.
The spill began at approximately 10:30 a.m. ENV crews arrived on scene by 11 a.m. and stopped the flow within 10 minutes.
The cause of the spill was determined to be a failed air relief valve. An estimated 1,500 gallons were discharged. Approximately 400 gallons were recovered with 1,100 gallons dissipating into the ground. The spill did not reach any streams or ocean waters. ENV cleaned, disinfected, and deodorized the affected area.
The state Department of Health was notified of the spill. Warning signs are posted in the area.
