Heavy rains cause overflow in Kahuku

HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is reporting a wastewater spill along Burroughs Road in Kahuku on Sunday, March 22, 2026 that occurred as a result of the Kona Low storm.

Heavy rains overwhelmed the Kahuku Wastewater Treatment Plant’s injection wells, resulting in a discharge of approximately 27,333 gallons of secondary treated effluent starting at 3:30 p.m.  Sunday. Crews stopped the spill by 7 p.m. Sunday, and the area has since been cleaned and disinfected.  All effluent has dissipated into the ground. The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health has been notified and posting of signs and sampling has been waived.
