HONOLULU – The City and County of Honoluluʻs Department of Environmental Services (ENV) confirms that a fire was reported before 11 a.m. today inside the H-POWER facility in Campbell Industrial Park. The fire was caused by a propane tank explosion inside the Waste Processing Facility (WPF) of the original plant.
The Honolulu Fire Department responded to the incident. The fire has since been contained and no injuries have been reported.
The Department is working closely with Reworld Honolulu, the facility operator, to assess the situation. Reworld anticipates some conveyor belt damage, water damage to electrical systems and replacing sprinkler heads. Reworld is also preparing a back-up diversion plan starting Thursday, Oct. 9, assuming the WPF is unavailable. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
H-POWER (Honolulu Program of Waste Energy Recovery)
H-POWER is a key part of Oʻahu’s waste management and clean energy strategy. Owned by the City & County of Honolulu, the facility reduces landfill use by converting solid waste into electricity. Through high-temperature combustion, steam is generated to power turbines, with energy sold to Hawaiian Electric and distributed to customers. H-POWER helps advance the island’s sustainability and energy resilience goals.
