ENV Acts swiftly to isolate failed sewer line near Awa Street

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Environmental Services (ENV) has sealed and taken a damaged 14-inch cast iron sewer main out of service following a sewer line failure reported on Monday, December 22, near Awa Street and Nimitz Highway.

ENV was notified at approximately 10:20 a.m. and quickly mobilized crews to contain the release and stop the discharge. An investigation determined the failure was attributed to corrosion of the cast iron pipe material beneath the Nimitz Highway Bridge. The estimated volume of the release was 237,718 gallons.

Warning signs that were posted as a precaution have been removed and water quality testing is no longer required in accordance with guidance from the State Department of Health as testing confirmed there are no ongoing impacts from the spill.

ENV takes incidents like this seriously and remains committed to protecting public health and the environment.
