| HONOLULU — With heavy rain and strong winds forecast to impact Oʻahu this weekend, the City’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) has implemented precautionary measures across its divisions to help maintain essential services and minimize potential severe weather impacts. ENV wastewater, refuse, and collection system maintenance teams are taking proactive steps to ensure systems remain operational before, during, and after the possible inclement weather. Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Crews have prepared critical equipment and staffing to respond quickly to changing conditions. This includes fueling trucks and heavy equipment, staging portable pumps and generators, and ensuring operators, mechanics, electricians, and technical staff are available as needed. Emergency operating procedures are in place, and construction activities are being secured to reduce storm-related risks. Refuse, Collection, and Disposal Trash, recycling, landfill, and H-POWER operations are expected to remain on schedule, with no anticipated service disruptions at this time. To maintain smooth operations, hauling priorities have been adjusted where necessary, contractors have been notified of the impending weather, and facilities are prepared to take appropriate action should conditions change. Collection System Maintenance Field crews have staged Vac and Cesspool trucks throughout the island, completed vehicle inspections, emptied debris tanks, and fueled equipment to allow for faster response to potential overflows. Pump station staff are closely monitoring conditions and prepared to respond to power outages or communication disruptions. Safety briefings have been conducted to ensure crews remain vigilant throughout the potential severe weather. Construction and Infrastructure Work Construction crews are securing active job sites, covering trenches, and closing out work that cannot be safely completed before the heavy rain and strong winds are expected to arrive to prevent erosion or collapse. ENV will continue to monitor weather conditions and coordinate closely with City leadership and emergency response partners. Operational adjustments may be made as severe weather develops. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official City communications at hnlalert.gov and to report wastewater or sewer emergencies to ENV by calling (808) 768-7272 as needed.
