HONOLULU–The Department of Environmental Services (ENV) will smoke test portions of the wastewater collection system between Sept. 7, 2026 to Oct. 16, 2026 in the Enchanted Lake area, weather permitting. Testing will occur during normal business hours with ENV crews present.
During the test, crews will fan non-toxic smoke into underground sewer pipes to help identify defects such as cracks, leaks or improper connections in the wastewater system. The results help the City maintain a safe and efficient sewer network.
The smoke used is non-hazardous and should not enter homes or businesses. However, smoke may enter through defective plumbing or dried drainpipes. If you have any seldom used drains, please pour enough water in the drain to fill it and create a water seal in the plumbing u-trap prior to the test. If smoke appears inside your home or building during testing, open windows for ventilation and notify the City at (808)768-7238. People and pets with chronic respiratory illnesses should be temporarily moved outside as a precaution.
For more information on smoke testing, please contact ENV at (808) 768-7238 or visit our website https://www.honolulu.gov/env/csm/division-of-collection-system-maintenance/
