City responds to wastewater spill at the Ahuimanu Preliminary treatment Facility

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is responding to a wastewater spill at the Ahuimanu Preliminary Treatment Facility (PTF) located at 47-305 Kahekili Hwy caused by elevated wastewater flows due to heavy rainfall and resulting inflow and infiltration into the wastewater system.

Beginning around 10 a.m., elevated flows overwhelmed the PTF and caused a manhole at the facility to overflow into an on-site retention basin containing stormwater runoff.  The retention basin subsequently exceeded capacity and discharged into Ahuimanu Stream.  The spill stopped at approximately 4:40 p.m. The total volume discharged into the stream is currently being determined.

Following the cessation of severe weather, ENV and the State Department of Health (DOH) will post warning signs and conduct water quality testing.
