City and State to install new raised pedestrian crossings on Pensacola Street
A raised crosswalk on Kalihi Street with striping to help make pedestrians more visible
HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) and the Hawaiʻi State Department of Transportation (HDOT) will be installing new raised crosswalks near McKinley High School on Pensacola Street, in an effort to increase safety, reduce motor vehicle speeds and to prevent collisions.
HDOT will begin installing new raised crosswalks at four intersections along Pensacola Street at Elm, Rycroft, Hoʻolaʻi, and Kamaile Streets on Monday, November 27th. Construction will be complete by Friday, December 1st, weather permitting. Message boards have been placed along Pensacola Street near South King Street and Kamaile Street to inform the public of construction work.
Currently, all four uncontrolled crosswalk locations are heavily used by students of McKinley High School and residents of the surrounding neighborhood. Speeding is a heavy concern along the multi-lane roadway, given the proximity of the high school and other community destinations. The raised crosswalks are an interim treatment until the future implementation of the full Complete Streets plan for the corridor, which includes shortening the pedestrian crossings, parking reconfiguration, and vehicular safety improvements around McKinley High School.
