The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) and the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) announce the temporary closure of the Salt Lake Municipal Parking Lot for upgrades to existing parking meters, pavement, and signage.

The parking lot, located on the mauka side of Likini Street, will be closed starting Monday, April 6, 2026 with construction expected to be finished in about a month. The parking lot is scheduled to reopen in early May 2026. The existing parking on Likini Street will be available throughout the parking lot upgrade.

The renovated parking lot will feature upgraded, 4G-enabled parking meters, similar to the ones found on metered City-street parking. Once the meters are installed, parkers will be able to pay for parking at the same rates using the Park Smarter app, credit card, coin, and our newest mobile payment option, Text to Pay. There is no required app for Text to Pay, just send a secure text message from your mobile device as shown in the sample image.

The $254,174 paving contract was awarded to Seal Pros LLC, with funding support provided by Councilmember Radiant Cordero. Additional maintenance assistance is being provided by Honolulu Police Department (HPD) meter maintenance staff and DPR specialized maintenance workers.

“I am excited for the upcoming improvements to the Salt Lake Municipal Lot at the Howard Shima Likini Street Mini Park,” said Councilmember Radian Cordero. “Combined, this lot provides thousands of residents with off-street parking and serves as a community gathering space and a respite from urban life. That’s why I prioritized $277,000 in the Fiscal Year 2026 budget to fund the long-needed paving upgrades to the parking lot, keeping the park safe, accessible, and welcoming for all.”

The Howard Shima Likini Street Mini Park will remain open to the public during the parking lot closure. The park was renamed after long-time community volunteer and Salt Lake advocate, Howard Shima, in August 2024. The nearly 1.3-acre mini-park bordering the parking lot and Salt Lake Waterway features several passive park amenities such as tables, benches, and walking paths shaded by several large Monkeypod and Shower trees.

Mahalo to the Salt Lake community and park goers for their patience while this parking lot is upgraded.
