The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) has completed cleaning and disinfection at ʻAikahi Community Park, including the Norman Aweau Baseball Field, following a wastewater overflow caused by recent Kona low storm conditions.
During the severe weather event on Saturday, March 21, the nearby Kailua Wastewater Treatment Plant was temporarily overwhelmed at its Tunnel Influent Pump Station (TIPS), resulting in an overflow that impacted portions of the park and Nuʻupia Pond. ENV immediately posted warning signs to protect public health and restrict access to affected areas as a precaution.
ENV crews conducted thorough cleaning and disinfection efforts, completing the work early Friday morning to ensure the park is safe ahead of the Kainalu Little League opening day.
“The safety of our community is our top priority,” said ENV Director Roger Babcock. “Our crews responded quickly to secure the area, complete cleanup operations, and restore the park so families can safely return and enjoy this important community space.”
