The City and County of Honolulu is continuing cleanup and recovery efforts with community, State, and Federal resources to address widespread damage from back-to-back Kona low storm systems, while responding to additional flooding conditions this afternoon.

To further assist in this mission, a website has been launched to compile information and resources for those most significantly impacted. Please visit bit.ly/konalowrecovery to access information about reporting home damage, health & safety tips, where you can find additional assistance, how you can continue to help others in their time of need, and much more.

Today, dozens of debris removal and hauling resources, such as dump trucks, heavy machinery, and dumpsters, continued their mission to support the clean-up on O‘ahu’s North Shore and other areas of the island.

Additional temporary debris dumping areas have been established for commercial and government use, including Patsy T. Mink Central O‘ahu Regional Park and Bill & Peggy Paty Kaiaka Bay Beach Park. These locations are not open for public debris dumping.

In the meantime, residents in Waialua and Hale‘iwa may also continue to place storm-related debris at the curb or roadside for collection. To help expedite the removal, sorting the debris into four piles will greatly assist the cleanup:

  • Green Waste: Tree branches, logs, and other vegetation. Green waste items must be cut to eight-foot lengths for smaller pieces, or two-foot lengths for logs and branches greater than nine inches in diameter.
  • Appliances and White Goods: Appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, air conditioners and water heaters.
  • Mud and Rocks
  • General Cleanup Debris: Any mixed storm-related waste not included above

Residents should not place regular rubbish, including food waste, in piles on the curb, as it can attract dangerous bacteria and vectors like flies, rodents, and cockroaches. This material should be held for regular trash collection, which will continue for all areas.

Additional Pickup Guidelines for Residents:

  • Place your debris in accessible locations along the street.
  • Do not block roadways, sidewalks or drainage systems.
  • Hazardous materials should not be put out for collection.

Residents may also transport storm debris to City and County of Honolulu transfer stations, including the Kawailoa Transfer Station in Haleʻiwa, and convenience centers. Convenience centers and transfers stations are open seven days per week, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Transfer Stations will accept:

  • Residential: Household trash & food waste (bagged)
  • Green waste (branches, leaves, storm vegetation)
  • Bulky items (furniture, mattresses, appliances)
  • Commercial loads with disposal account

Convenience Centers will accept one truck per household:

  • Household trash & food waste (bagged)
  • Green waste (branches, leaves, storm vegetation) except at the Wahiawā Convenience Center
  • Bulky items (furniture, mattresses, appliances)

H-POWER will accept commercial accounts with:

  • Mixed municipal solid waste (household trash) only.
  • No bulky items, metal, dirt, green waste or construction debris.

Waimanalo Gulch will accept:

  • Residential hauled construction debris (concrete, dirt, rock).
  • No commercial or trailer vehicles.

Additional City and County of Honolulu park facilities utilized for storm-recovery efforts include:

  • Waialua District Park: fresh water distribution and operation center
  • Hale‘iwa Ali‘i Beach Park: medical staging and supply area
  • Banzai Skate Park: fresh water distribution
  • George F. Wright Wahiawā District Park: operation center
  • Kāne‘ohe District Park: emergency shelter
  • Waimānalo District Park: food distribution

Kahua O Waikalua Neighborhood Park and Kualoa Regional Park are expected to remain closed again tomorrow, March 24, along with numerous play fields and some indoor facilities around the island. Please call specific park staff to determine if you permitted facility is available for use.
