View Studies
The Honolulu Public Views Study identifies what constitutes important public views within the Honolulu study area. A “public view” is any view from a public facility such as a park, roadway, public building, towards landmarks or vistas, and may include views at night of the city skyline and important Hawaiian navigational stars. It may also include views relating to Hawaiian lore, culture, and practices.
The DPP and HCDA have contracted with Dyett and Bhatia to assist in identifying what the important Honolulu views are, by establishing methods for their identification, and strategies for their protection. An informal community survey was conducted in June 2019. In addition, an archaeological and cultural review report has been prepared. The Coastal View Study inventories coastal views around Oahu, and it recommends ways for the City to better manage development in order to preserve and enhance those views. It is used in making decisions concerning the location and scale of resort, residential, and other urban activities along our coast, including Special Management Area permitting. Particularly significant are the “Design Guidelines” proposed in the report.
