What is CivCheck?

CivCheck is an AI-guided permit preparation software that helps applicants check for compliance with applicable code regulations and local permitting requirements, cutting down on review time and back-and-forth with the City.

CivCheck:

  1. Asks you for basic information about your project to identify which files and regulations to check for.
  2. Walks you through adding all the required plans and documents.
  3. Scans your plans and documents for City-specific requirements, such as, code references and electrical outlets on project plans. The software can process handwritten submissions.
  4. Checks compliance with permit and code requirements, such as intake, residential, and land use regulations.

Use CivCheck if your project falls under any of these categories:

  • Single-family, two family, and duplex projects
  • Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and Ohanas
  • New construction, additions, and alterations

No, CivCheck does not replace an official review, nor does it guarantee a permit.

CivCheck is currently optional to use, however, it will become mandatory later this year. We highly encourage applicants to create an account today.

No, if your project qualifies for an Instant Online Permit, you may skip CivCheck.

The person preparing applications with CivCheck should be comfortable revising project plans and documents. In many cases, a plan preparer (e.g. the design professional or contractor) may be a better fit than the permit applicant (the homeowner).

Go to DPP’s home page and find the “CivCheck” tab. Click on “Create a CivCheck account” and follow the account creation instructions.

No, CivCheck is entirely free to use.

We recommend starting your project in CivCheck a few weeks before you plan to submit your application to the DPP. Since the software checks for compliance with detailed code regulations and other requirements, you may be required to make updates to application materials that take some time. This initial work will facilitate a smoother review process with the DPP.

Moving forward, documents like Appendix B are required at initial submission, both to complete CivCheck’s process and to submit your application to the DPP.

No, using CivCheck is required only for your first submission. The formal review cycles are managed directly with the DPP’s permit management software and ProjectDox.
