Study Background:

The City and County of Honolulu requested federal assistance from USACE to evaluate potential solutions to flooding along Wailupe Stream, which affects the ʻĀina Haina community. The request follows a history of flooding in the area, most notably the severe storm on April 13, 2018, which produced torrential rainfall and significant flooding. That event caused stream bank erosion from the boulder basin to Hind Drive and resulted in damage to properties along the stream.

In response, the City and USACE entered into a cost-sharing partnership on September 26, 2024, initiating this flood risk management study. The study is in its early stages, with the project team currently analyzing stream conditions and beginning to assess alternative plans to reduce flood risk from future Wailupe Stream flood events.

Additional information about the study is available on the USACE Honolulu District website. The website can be accessed via the link or QR code provided below.
