North Kalāheo Avenue Bridge (No. 445)

KAILUA – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC) is advising the public of upcoming rehabilitation work on the North Kalaheo Avenue Bridge No. 445 over the Kawainui Canal in Kailua.

The project will include repairs to concrete delamination, spalls, and cracks on the existing bridge structure, construction of new sheet pile retaining walls behind each bridge abutment, and replacement of bridge railings, the wearing surface, drain pipes, and approach guardrails. These improvements are intended to strengthen the structural integrity of the bridge, extend its service life, and enhance public safety.

Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, March 30, 2026, and is expected to continue for approximately seven months, weather and unforeseen conditions permitting. Work hours will be Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays.

Temporary traffic changes will be required throughout the project. During work hours, one travel lane will remain open to traffic in both directions, with vehicles alternating under the direction of traffic control personnel. Outside of work hours, the bridge will return to normal two-lane, two-way traffic.

During a construction stage anticipated between May and July, the Kailua-bound lane will be closed continuously from Monday at 8:30 a.m. through Friday at 3:30 p.m., including non-work hours, to safely accommodate construction activities. During this period, the remaining lane will carry Kāneʻohe-bound traffic only, and Kailua-bound motorists will be detoured. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and follow all posted signs and traffic control personnel in the area.

The anticipated traffic patterns by month are as follows:

Month (Click the links below to view traffic modifications) Weekdays
April One lane open to both directions, alternating traffic, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
May – July One lane open for Kāneʻohe-bound traffic only, from Monday 8:30 a.m. through Friday 3:30 p.m. (including non-work hours), while Kailua-bound traffic will be detoured.
August – October One lane open to both directions, alternating traffic, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
No lane closures on weekends or holidays

During construction, one sidewalk will be closed while the other will remain open to pedestrians.  Recreational use of the waterway beneath the bridge will be maintained along approximately half of the bridge length.

The City appreciates the community’s patience during this process. Questions and comments may be directed to the City and County of Honolulu, Department of Design and Construction, at (808) 768-8400.
