HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu Department of Design and Construction wishes to inform the public of an upcoming emergency structural improvement project in the vicinity of 409 ʻIolani Avenue.

The project will address a damaged wall below the two-lane roadway and will provide structural improvements along the roadway.

Construction is expected to begin on Monday, September 28, 2026, and will take approximately five (5) months to complete. Work will occur Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays.

The work will include drilling and installing soil nails, weep holes, and a drainage system into the existing wall face; installing footings and reinforcing steel; applying shotcrete; demolishing, removing, and disposing of existing asphalt and concrete sidewalks, trees, and plants; constructing new concrete sidewalks and landscaping; trimming tree and root growth; pruning canopies; removing trees as necessary; and relocating utilities. During the project, traffic through the work zone may be contra-flowed. The contractor will coordinate and manage local area traffic for residents, including deliveries, trash collection, and emergency services. The public should anticipate periodic lane closures, anticipate delays, and allow extra travel time when navigating the area. The public is advised to observe all traffic controls, posted signs, and Special Duty Police Officers.

Every effort will be made to complete this emergency work as quickly as possible and with as little inconvenience to the community as possible. We appreciate the public’s assistance and cooperation during this project, and we thank them for their patience and support as we work to improve roads in our community. Questions and comments may be directed to the City and County of Honolulu, Department of Design and Construction, at (808) 768-8400.
