Newly refurbished railings on Dillingham Boulevard Bridge
HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announces the completion of the Dillingham Boulevard Bridge Rehabilitation Project. The work successfully restored the structural integrity of the bridge which had been impacted by severe corrosion.
The project focused on long-term durability by emphasizing corrosion prevention and restoring the strength of the bridge to safely support its original design loads and to replace the bridge railings. All reinforcing steel used in the repairs was coated with an anti-corrosion layer, while every batch of newly placed concrete included a corrosion-inhibiting compound. Additionally, the exposed underside of the bridge received a surface-applied corrosion protection treatment.
Repairs also included spall repair on foundation piles, pile caps, beams, and the slab soffit. Corroded reinforcing steel was replaced, and all bridge railings were demolished and rebuilt with new reinforcement and concrete.
Throughout construction, two-way traffic remained open and unaffected, as all work was conducted either beneath the bridge or within the sidewalk right-of-way.
The project – which started in April 2024 and finished in September 2025 – was completed ahead of schedule by two months. The total cost was approximately $1.5 million. No further construction projects are scheduled for the Dillingham Boulevard Bridge.
DDC extends its appreciation to the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation and NAN Inc. for their coordination during the project, particularly in providing staging space and scheduling support during the replacement of the upstream railing.
