HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction is notifying the public that the previously postponed archaeological survey will resume on April 15, 2026 (weather permitting), following a temporary suspension due to recent adverse weather conditions.
Work began on April 6 and is scheduled to continue through Thursday, April 30, 2026. Activities were temporarily paused to limit subgrade exposure and protect the site during the recent weather event.
With improved conditions, trenching operations will now resume as planned. However, due to the delay, not all phases of the excavation will be completed by April 30 and will be continued at a future date.
The parking lot, currently managed by the City’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS), will remain open to the public during the survey. Work will be carried out in stages at multiple test pit locations, with each excavation requiring the temporary closure of up to eight parking stalls.
Work hours will be weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., excluding weekends and holidays.
The purpose of the survey is to determine whether culturally or historically significant resources are present and must be addressed prior to construction. The investigation includes exploratory excavation at 15 locations within the property and will require partial closures and temporary traffic adjustments throughout the project period.
Access to and from the parking lot will remain available through its two vehicle entrances and two pedestrian entrances, although one vehicle entrance may be temporarily closed at certain times. At least one vehicle entrance will remain open at all times.

To minimize inconvenience, the City’s archaeological consultant will monitor traffic conditions and adjust equipment placement as needed. Equipment staging may occur along Aulike Street and/or Maluniu Avenue to reduce impacts within the parking lot. Alternate public parking is available across the street at 25 Aulike Street.
The public is advised of the following potential impacts:
- Temporary closures may occur at the Aulike Street and Maluniu Avenue entrance and exit driveways.
- Up to eight parking stalls may be temporarily closed at a time during excavation activities.
- Traffic adjustments may occur to accommodate equipment staging and work zones.
