Hawai‘i electric vehicle license plates getting 1 extra character

HONOLULU – Electric vehicle license plates in Hawai‘i are getting a new look to help efforts to keep pace with their growing statewide popularity.

The redesigned five-character license plates will have the words electric vehicle arranged vertically in front of their letter-number configuration.

The current design features four-character license plates that have the words electric vehicle stacked horizontally followed by the letter-number configuration.

The one additional character is expected to significantly help efforts to continue meeting the growing public demand for electric vehicle license plates across the state, where electric vehicle registration totals have increased 62 % over the past three years.

In 2022, there were 23,016 electric vehicles registered by county DMVs in Hawai‘i. That total rose to 37,357 last year.

“We could not be more excited about the opportunity that the new five-character configuration provides our efforts to avoid running out of letter-number combinations for electric vehicle license plates,” said Kim Hashiro, director of the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Customer Services, which administers the statewide contract for Hawai‘i license plates.
