Under the supervision of the Park Ranger II, the Park Ranger I is responsible for protecting and preserving CCH parks while ensuring the safety and welfare of the patrons. The Park Ranger I gathers information on various unauthorized activities and educates patrons on rules and regulations to help promote security and safety in the parks. This position may serve as a liaison for Honolulu Police Department, park personnel, and the community. Performs related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Park Ranger I position is a temporary position created for the Department of Parks and Recreation’s Park Ranger Pilot Project. The Park Ranger I performs duties and responsibilities similar to that of the Park Attendant. To meet the specific needs of the pilot project, the Park Ranger I is also responsible for specialized work including but not limited to: active research and data collection at all CCH park sites across Oahu, and quarterly reports with stakeholders.
Description of Duties and Responsibilities:
· Comprehensive knowledge of park rules, policies and procedures. Able to educate and explain these standards to employees and the general public. Information can be conveyed either in writing or verbally to staff and park visitors.
· Gathers and maintains factual information (data) based on park activity via observation. Provides information to the Park Ranger II for the City’s Park Ranger Pilot Project and other assignments.
· Assists the Park Ranger II in actively gathering and organizing relevant materials and information for use in meeting project objectives and reports.
· Coordinates with other Park Ranger I staff and the Park Ranger II on field visits to various parks to research and gather required data.
· Intakes and resolve complaints from park users and other various stakeholders regarding unauthorized commercial activities.
· Maintains a welcoming environment by establishing positive contact with parks users, provides information regarding allowable park activities, and provides a positive safety presence within the park.
· Monitors and documents any damage to grounds, equipment and/or facilities in the park. Reports findings to the Park Ranger II for appropriate action.
· Reaches out to law enforcement as needed to ensure park safety of staff, visitors, and facilities.
· May enforce rules and regulations regarding all commercial activities.
· May issue civil citations for violations.
· May testify in court on violations of park permits, rules and regulations.
· May assist park employees when necessary.
· Proficient in the use of different computer software such as Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel to accomplish essential functions of the position.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma
And
2 years of experience handling public interactions
Or
Experience as a park ranger, law enforcement, or equivalent experience
And
May require Guard Card within six (6) months of hire
And
Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment
