CREWS RESPOND TO WAIALAE NUI  SEWAGE SPILL

            Workers from the Collection System Maintenance Division of the City Department of Environmental Services responded today to a sewage spill in lower Waialae Nui.

            Raw sewage was reported coming out of a manhole in an easement behind a Hoakoa Place home about 8:15 a.m. The City crew responded and found tree roots had blocked an 8-inch sewer main, causing the wastewater to back up. An estimated 1,950 gallons of wastewater is believed to have spilled from the manhole. Some of the wastewater entered a nearby storm drain. The pipe was cleared and the area was disinfected by 11:30 a.m. 

The Department of Health was notified and warning signs are being posted. The public is advised to heed the signs and avoid affected areas.
