FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 1, 2003
SEWAGE SPILL CONTAINED IN KANEOHE
A defective meter at the Kaneohe Preliminary Treatment Sewage Facility caused an estimated 15,000 gallons of wastewater to overflow a holding tank and enter Kawa Stream today (December 1).
The spill was detected at 2:00 p.m. and brought under control in 10 minutes.
The faulty meter normally triggers a pump when wastewater reaches a certain level in the holding tank, preventing an overflow and transporting the sewage to the Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant for further processing.
The State Health Department was notified of the spill. Warning signs were posted at affected areas of Kawa Stream.
