NAMING THE GOVERNMENT OFFICE BUILDING THE
WALTER MURRAY GIBSON BUILDING
WHEREAS, Ordinance 89-95 establishes procedures for naming
City facilities for an individual; and
WHEREAS, Walter Murray Gibson (January 16, 1822 -
January 21, 1888) was a famous lecturer, journalist, legislative
leader, and Prime Minister for King Kalakaua, Minister of Finance
and Minister of Interior; and
WHEREAS, he was instrumental in the construction of Hawaii's
significant landmarks such as Iolani Palace, Statue of Kamehameha
the Great, and Kapiolani Park; and
WHEREAS, he encouraged the preservation of Hawaiian culture,
language, the monarchy, and the health of the Hawaiian people;
and
WHEREAS, as a gifted communicator in both written and oral
English and Hawaiian, Gibson distinguished himself as publisher
of the bilingual Ka Nuhou Hawaii, publisher and correspondent of
the Pacific Commercial Advertiser, and contributor to Island
publications such as the Friend, the Polynesian, and the Hawaiian
Gazette; and
WHEREAS, despite his many contributions to Hawaii, Gibson
was exiled from the Islands because of his controversial actions
and his stinging attack against westernization; and
WHEREAS, the Government Office Building, formerly known as
the Old District Court Building at 842 Bethel Street, is a
prominent, historic building worthy of being named the
Walter Murray Gibson Building; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City and County of
Honolulu that the Government Office Building be named the
Walter Murray Gibson Building; and BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the City Clerk is authorized to transmit copies of the Resolution to interested persons and agencies.
