WHEREAS, Duke Paoa Kahanamoku achieved worldwide fame due to
his competitive swimming accomplishments, surfing promotional
activities, public service, and, most importantly, personal
kindness, grace, and gentility; and
WHEREAS, in swimming events, Duke Paoa Kahanamoku won gold
medals at the 1912 and 1920 Olympic Games and other medals at the
1924 and 1928 Olympic Games; and
WHEREAS, he was a highly regarded surfer and is considered
the father of modern surfing; and
WHEREAS, because of these accomplishments, Duke Paoa
Kahanamoku is a member of both the Swimming Hall of Fame and
Surfing Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Duke Paoa Kahanamoku also had a long and
distinguished career in public service as the City and County of
Honolulu Sheriff from 1934 to 1960 and State Ambassador At-Large
and City Official Greeter from 1960 to 1968; and
WHEREAS, upon the passing of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku on
January 22, 1968, the Reverend Abraham K. Akaka proclaimed:
Duke Kahanamoku represented the Alii Nobility
in the highest and truest sense -- concern
for others, humility in victory, courage in
adversity, good sportsmanship in defeat. He
had a quality of life we are all challenged
and inspired to emulate;
WHEREAS, Section 22-9.3(a)(3)(C), ROH, authorizes, in an
exceptional case, a new or existing City facility, such as a
police station, to be named for a deceased person who has"achieved significant recognition historically on the city,
state, national or international level"; and
WHEREAS, Section 22-9.5(f), ROH, authorizes the Council, on
its own motion, to designate the name of a new or existing City
facility by adoption of an appropriate resolution; and
WHEREAS, in 1990, the Council adopted Resolution 90-352,
CD1, naming the facility housing the Honolulu Police Department
Waikiki Substation on Kuhio Beach as the "Duke Paoa Kahanamoku
Building"; and
WHEREAS, since then, that facility has been replaced by a
new one constructed as part of the Kuhio Beach improvement
project; and
WHEREAS, the Council finds that naming the new facility as
the "Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Building" is an exceptional case under
Section 22-9.3(a)(3)(C); now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City and County of
Honolulu that, pursuant to the authority of Section 22-9.5(f),
ROH, the facility housing the Honolulu Police Department Waikiki
Substation on Kuhio Beach is named the "Duke Paoa Kahanamoku
Building"; and
