Mayor's Memorial Day Poster Contest

Each year, Mayor Mufi Hannemann, with the help of the City and County Department of Parks and Recreation, and the State Department of Education, sponsors a poster contest for all schools, public and private, statewide.  The theme of the contest is "Sew a Lei for Memorial Day."  The purpose of the contest is to publicize the sewing of lei to decorate the graves at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.  The contest runs from mid- January until the end of February.  Students enter in three age categories, Kindergarten – 4th grade, 5th – 8th grade, and 9th – 12th grade.  Judges select winning posters based on how well they portray the theme, on creativity, and on the use of color and composition.

The first place artwork in each category is turned into a poster that solicits the sewing of 50,000 lei for Memorial Day.  These posters are distributed statewide to all public schools and public libraries, as well as to all City and County of Honolulu parks and satellite City Halls.  First, second, and third place, as well as six honorable mention artworks in each category, are displayed at Honolulu Hale's third floor gallery for the entire month of May.

In addition, all students that place are recognized in a ceremony at the Mayor's office at Honolulu Hale.  The Mayor presents the students certificates of achievement, along with prizes donated by corporate sponsors.  The students' family, teachers, and school principals are also invited to attend.
