DIVISIONS AND MAJOR BRANCHES

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Department of Parks and Recreation manages, maintains, and operates all parks and recreational facilities of the city; develops and implements programs for cultural and recreational activities; and  beautifies the public streets of the city.  Its mission is to enhance the leisure lifestyle and quality of life for the people of Oahu through active and passive recreational opportunities.

STAFFING AND BUDGET

For fiscal year 2007 the Department of Parks and Recreation was authorized 847 full time regular positions, 24 temporary positions and 267 Personal Services Contract employees. The department appropriated $58,353,260 for its operating budget. It is responsible for approximately 6,108 acres of park and recreation land.

BOARD OF PARKS AND RECREATION

There is an advisory Board of Parks and Recreation which consists of nine members who are appointed by the Mayor and are confirmed by the City Council. The Board advises the Mayor, the City Council and the Director on matters relating to recreation and cultural activities and associated facilities. 

The current members, as of May 2006, are:  Dennis Agena, Cecilia Blackfield, Wilbert Ching, Richard Haru, Gary Pacarro, Joan Raines, Donald Takaki (Chair), Richard Towill and Hugh Yoshida (Vice chair). 

PARK RULES AND REGULATIONS

Pursuant to and by virtue of the authority set forth in Section 4-105 Revised Charter of Honolulu, the Director of Parks and Recreation of the City and County of Honolulu, subject to the approval of the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, is authorized to promulgate, amend or repeal rules and regulations affecting the public as are necessary to the performance of the function of the department.

CAMPING INFORMATION

Camping permits are required and free and may be obtained from the Department of Parks and Recreation in the Frank F. Fasi Municipal Building at 650 South King Street, ground floor, or at any Satellite City Hall. For more camping information press this link .

USE OF CITY PARK FACILITIES

Park use permits and deposits are required for the use of City park facilities for certain activities. For more information regarding park use permit requirements and deposits press this link.
